That physical agitation is one reason a Cloth Brush wash can do a good job removing road film, mud, salt, bugs, and everyday dirt.
But there’s a trade-off.
Whenever something physically touches your vehicle’s paint, there’s an opportunity for scratching or marring to occur.
Even though modern Cloth Brushes are designed to be much gentler than the stiff brushes used in older automatic washes, they’re still repeatedly contacting hundreds of vehicles.
If dirt, grit, sand, or other abrasive particles become trapped in the Cloth Brushes, that contamination can potentially be transferred across the next vehicle’s paint.

Nothing physically scrubs the vehicle.
Instead, touchless systems use specialized cleaning chemicals to loosen contamination, followed by high-pressure water to rinse it away. The vehicle then typically passes through a high-powered air-drying system.
The biggest advantage is obvious: there are no Cloth Brushes contacting your paint.
Removing that physical contact greatly reduces one of the primary causes of wash-induced swirl marks and fine scratches.
For owners of darker-colored vehicles, professionally paint-corrected cars, or ceramic-coated vehicles, that can be a major advantage.
However, touchless washing isn’t perfect.
Because the system can’t physically scrub the surface, it must rely more heavily on chemistry and water pressure. Some touchless washes use stronger detergents to compensate for the lack of physical agitation.

Cloth Brush vs. Touchless: Which One Cleans Better?
When we’re talking strictly about cleaning ability, a Cloth Brush wash generally has an advantage.
There’s a reason professional detailers use some form of physical agitation during a proper hand wash.
Cleaning chemicals can loosen dirt, but controlled physical contact helps remove contamination that chemistry and water alone can’t always eliminate.
A Cloth Brush wash uses that same basic principle – but without the control that comes with a professional hand wash.
A detailer can constantly inspect wash mitts and towels and replace or rinse them when they become contaminated.
You don’t have that level of control with an automatic Cloth Brush system.
Touchless washes eliminate the contact issue, but the trade-off is that they may not get the vehicle quite as clean.
So the question isn’t simply:
“Which wash gets my car cleaner?”
A better question is:
“Which wash gives me the best balance between getting my vehicle clean and protecting its finish?”
Which Car Wash Is More Likely to Cause Swirl Marks?

For that reason, we generally recommend avoiding Cloth Brush automatic car washes on ceramic-coated vehicles.
If your only two options are Cloth Brush or touchless, we would choose touchless for a ceramic-coated vehicle.
Can Touchless Car Wash Chemicals Hurt a Ceramic Coating?
A quality ceramic coating should have good chemical resistance, but that doesn’t mean you should expose it unnecessarily to aggressive cleaners.
Touchless systems need chemistry to do much of the work that Cloth Brushes would normally accomplish.
Repeated exposure to stronger detergents can potentially affect the coating’s surface characteristics and may reduce its water behavior or longevity over time.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the ceramic coating has failed.
Sometimes contamination or chemical residue on top of the coating can reduce its hydrophobic performance even though the underlying coating remains intact.
This is why ceramic-coated vehicles should periodically receive a proper maintenance wash and inspection.
Be Careful With Automatic “Wax” Applications
Many automatic washes offer upgraded packages that include some type of spray wax, shine enhancer, or paint protectant.
More isn’t always better.
If your vehicle already has a professionally installed ceramic coating, there’s usually no reason to continuously apply unknown waxes or polymers on top of it.
These products can leave behind residue that masks some of the coating’s natural characteristics.
Instead, use maintenance products that are compatible with your particular ceramic coating.
What About Waxed or Paint-Sealed Vehicles?

If water no longer beads or sheets the way it previously did, it may be time to reapply your wax or sealant.
Don’t Forget About Drying
How you dry your vehicle matters too.
Automatic air dryers frequently leave water behind around:

- Door handles
- Emblems
- Grilles

- Trim
- License plates
- Lower body panels
Allowing mineral-rich water to dry on the paint can create water spots.
If possible, use a clean, high-quality microfiber drying towel or automotive air blower to remove the remaining water.
But there’s an important warning here:
Don’t aggressively wipe a vehicle that isn’t completely clean.
If a touchless wash left road film or dirt behind, rubbing a drying towel across that contamination can create the same type of marring you’re trying to prevent.

If your choice is strictly between a Cloth Brush car wash and a touchless car wash, our preference is touchless—particularly if you care about maintaining the appearance of your paint.
That doesn’t mean a touchless wash is equivalent to a proper hand wash.
It’s simply the option that eliminates Cloth Brushes from contacting the paint.
For an older daily driver where perfect paint isn’t a major concern, the cleaning ability and convenience of a Cloth Brush wash may be acceptable.
But if you own a newer vehicle, a luxury or performance vehicle, a dark-colored vehicle, or you’ve invested in professional paint correction and ceramic coating, we’d stay away from Cloth Brush washes whenever possible.
What Is the Best Way to Wash Your Vehicle?
For maximum paint protection, a properly performed hand wash is still our preferred method.
A professional hand wash allows you to control:
- The cleanliness of your wash mitts
- The quality and pH of the shampoo
- The amount of lubrication on the paint
- The washing technique
- The towels touching the vehicle
- The drying process
- The products being used on top of your wax, sealant, or ceramic coating
This level of control simply isn’t possible when your vehicle is moving through an automatic car wash.
